This is an installation that received The Source Grant on Maui presented in 2010 at the Source Festival in Keanae. It is a counter rotating laser sculpture. The word “Merkaba” means, “chariot of light” in ancient Judaic mysticism. It is the divine light vehicle allegedly used by ascended masters to connect with and reach those in tune with the higher realms. In modern esoteric teachings, it is taught that the Merkaba is an inter-dimensional vehicle consisting of two equally sized, interlocked tetrahedra of energy with a common center, where one tetrahedron points up (the masculine polarity) and the other down (the feminine polarity) and spins in opposite directions. According to mystics, this field of energy exists around every living creature. After successfully, tho very briefly, reaching an enlightened state thru a merkaba mediation, I became obsessed with bringing it into the physical realm and pondered how to do it for years back in Chicago. I tried sculptures, painting a whole room white and using projectors, animation, making mobiles – but nothing worked. Since the two tetrahedrons spin in opposite directions around the meditator, it seemed obviously physically impossible…. unless it is made of light. Finally one day on Maui it dawned on me, Lasers! To make it spin in two directions, I used two ceiling fan ball-bearing units. This project allows people, one at a time, to stand on a platform inside a true-to-life sized merkaba energy field and experience the moving sacred geometry that exists around them.
